Class of Fashion 2011

Nov. 22nd 2010 by Ashley Veraart (former Fesjon author)

The Class of Fashion 2011 is a major project with several talents working together in the fields of hair and makeup, styling, photography, and models to eventually produce one main photograph that captures all the fashion trends of spring /summer 2011. This main picture is based on a class picture with 20 different stereotypes.

The fashion project was conceived in the mind of young fashion photographer, Mike van der Ent of Pasarella Photography. He had the idea to capture all trends for an upcoming season in one image. This is also how the concept the class of fashion 2011 was born. A high school class used to be a combination of all sorts of people. It was like a subculture that was quite a real representation of what is popular, as said by Mike van der Ent. Therefore, this concept is the ideal way for this project in which 20 models will represent the different stereotypes ranking from nerds to a cheerleader, and from a sports dude to the shy girl. Is Orange the new Red?

Oct. 4th 2010 by Mariana Davelaar (editor)

At New York Fashion Week, bright orange lipstick literally popped off the runway. Paired with everything from minimalistic blacks to jolly floral prints, it made a statement that was fun, flirty and fresh, and it’s a trend you can easily wear this fall to be ahead of the fashion curve.

We saw this citrus trend at twelve different shows. While the tangerine shade does follow, spring’s hottest hue has the added plus of emphasizing your eye color and the highlights in your hair.

We asked Shiseido Makeup Artistic Director Dick Page, who created the brilliant orange lip for the Marc by Marc Jacobs and Isaac Mizrahi shows, how one unique shade can end up dominating the runways.

Rusty

Sep. 30th 2010 by Ashley Veraart (former Fesjon author)

This winter we’ve spotted a new colour: the colour of rust. This orange brown complexion doesn’t suit everyone, but if combined in the right way, it can be a real eyecatcher. Almost all large fashion stores offer items in this new colour. Dresses, tops, trousers, skirts, anything goes. It’s a unexpected but beautiful fashion colour.

J’aime mon Carré

Aug. 19th 2010 by Mariana Davelaar (editor)

If you’ve ever received a silk scarf, chances are you’ve wondered how to wear it particularly those of the square variety. Well, wonder no more: Enter J’aime Mon Carré, or in English, “I Love My Scarf.”

A series of street-style shots akin to The Sartorialist or Art of the Trench, the newest Polaroid-bordered fashion snaps are curated via an unlikely source: Hermès (yes, of the $80,000 handbag).

The storied French fashion house has had a bit of a reboot, now appealing to a younger crowd and taking their styling tips, too. Every photo features an inventive, out-of-the-box way to wear the designer silk square.

Marketing ploy or pure art? Most likely a little bit of both, as the site was launched to introduce a limited-edition line of scarves that will be offered at Colette in Paris in September just in time for Paris Fashion Week.

A word of thanks

Guest Editor for a week: Johnny Chavez

I get my inspiration from everything I see, from people walking down the street, to the buildings and trees that surround an area I’m in. Life is my inspiration and my light that keeps me growing as a person, and as a stylist. I think its important to show who you are as a person through your journey in life and what you have experienced and learned. Just being inventive with your work as a stylist and really letting it show.

We all have our own ways of styling, I’m not afraid to take risk in trying everything. Just for the experience. Whether it be a good or bad one; it was still worth it. I’ve always been grateful for what I have been able to accomplish in my few years of styling, and I plan to Keep it that way.

I thank those who have been in my life, and for those I have yet to meet.

Fashion is Art!!

Guest Editor for a week: Johnny Chavez

Fashion is art.

It’s a form of expression and an inspiration in telling A story. It’s about going beyond the limits and standing out. Letting The inner dark part of you out that you secretly hide within.
Many People today have lost that mindset of what fashion really is. Its Become such a cliché word to most individuals. Creating is something you have to be passionate about when you style and design.
You get to Be creative and really embark on a new side of you that you never knew existed. It’s about capturing the expression of that character in That one single photo. In one frame telling a complete story.
That’s a task and a vision with most of the work. Finding the right pieces, mix and matching, thinking outside of the box to make the viewer say wow!

Summer 2010 Trend: The Baja Is Back

Aug. 5th 2010 by Mariana Davelaar (editor)

Fashion has a constant case of nostalgia, and the newest-old-thing is the Baja.

Throw one on over a gown or, pair one with sporty printed short-shorts for an urban day vibe.

Fortunately, we don’t  need to go to Bergdorf’s to shop for this beach wear staple (or wait until November). Cool young Brooklyn-based designers Ace & Jig developed their own line of Baja fabric in India.

For the legit iteration, which never went away just underground, Señor Lopez’s from Mexico is the place to go. This retro number was recently spotted on the fashion-mad site Polyvore.
