Toen ik de outfits van Alicia Keys en Beyonce in de videoclip van het nummer ‘Put it in a love song’ zag, begon ik bijna te watertanden. Ik zag mezelf (5 minuten lang) al helemaal in de outfit van Alicia en begon te bedenken hoe ik de outfit zelf zou kunnen maken. Ik wist waar ik de juiste stof moest halen tegen een redelijke prijs, ik heb een naaimachine, garen en naalden. Het enige probleem was dat ik niet goed  wist (lees: niet weet, ik nog maar een beginner) waar en hoe ik moest beginnen. I almost started drooling when I saw Miss Keys’ and Beyonce’s outfits for the video of their song “put it in a lovesong.” I saw myself in their outfits and started to think up some ways which would allow me to make the outfits myself. I knew where I’d find the right fabrics for a reasonable price, zippers, needles and so on. The only problem was that I did not really now where and how to start cutting and sowing – I just started using my sewingmachine.

Eigenlijk had ik m’n droom al weken verdrongen, maar toen ik vandaag op twitter aan het ‘dwalen’ was, kwam ik terecht op de twitterpagina van Maya Lake, designer van Boxing Kitten. Na het zien van haar bio waarin ze ”Ethnic Rockabilly” had neergelegd, besloot ik haar website te bekijken. En natuurlijk kwam ik op de site een foto’s  van Beyonce en Miss Keys tegen, geschoten tijdens de opnamen van “Put it in a love song.” It had been awhile and I had kind of pushed my ‘dream’ to the back of my mind, when I was roaming around twitter and found Maya Lake’s twitterpage. She is the designer (and founder) of Boxing Kitten. After reading “Ethnic Rockabilly” in her bio I decided to take a look at her website, because – I thought – it sounded funky. And as I look around I see pictures of Alicia Keys and Beyonce wearing ‘the’ outfits!

Maya omschrijft haar creaties als: “Vintage-inspired silhouettes celebrate a time gone by, with designs that call upon the spirit and lives of mid-century American women that are modernized for the woman of today and the future.”‘ Kleurrijke ankara stoffen zorgen ervoor dat de redelijke simpele ontwerpen een hele andere, beetje brutale, vibe krijgen. Maya describes the silhouettes of her designs as “Vintage-inspired silhouettes celebrate a time gone by, with designs that call upon the spirit and lives of mid-century American women that are modernized for the woman of today and the future.”‘ And it shows. Her clothes are obviously inspired by the old times and given a twist through the Ankara fabrics she uses. They definitely add some attitude.

Helaas is met deze nieuwe ontdekking mijn zoektocht nog niet helemaal geeïndigd. Er staat namelijk nergens hoe ik zelf (afgezien van de online shop) aan zo’n outfit kan komen… Unfortunately finding her website did not bring an end to my journey. Why? The website doesn’t say where her designs (besides the online shop) are sold…

Als je meer weten over de designer – die zichzelf de skills leerde die ze nodig had om haar creaties tot leven te wekken -, de stoffen die ze gebruikt of de mensen die haar kleding dragen?
