Victoria Beckham on New York Fashion Week

Jan. 13th 2011 by Mariana Davelaar (editor)

New York is keeping Victoria Beckham for at least another season. Though British news sources speculated that the designer would take her fashion show to London because of her husband’s new football gig, the British Fashion Council has denied the move.

The rumors started when a “source close to the designer” told the British Standard: “She will be working hard over the next month to get everything ready for London Fashion Week. To be accepted as a serious designer in London means a great deal to her. She plans to work through as much of her pregnancy as possible and has told colleagues it’s very much business as usual.”

Victoria may stay in New York this season, but it doesn’t mean she won’t show in London in spring 2012. She’ll have a new baby by then and may want to stay close to home.

Blogger are taking over

Oct. 15th 2010 by Mariana Davelaar (editor)

That bloggen is a new trend, we knew that for a while. But that bloggers are “taking over” is a fact.

A few years ago it wasn’t thinkable that “normal” people of editors from a website would be invited for a Fashion event, or even Fashion Week. But that has changed.

Designers and PR agencies are seeing the effect of bloggers. Not only do bloggers have more visitors than the circulation of good selling magazines, the biggest advantage is that bloggers publish an article right after a fashion show or event. That means that magazines, especially monthly magazines, are having “old” news if their magazine is available at the bookstores. Read More

Is Orange the new Red?

Oct. 4th 2010 by Mariana Davelaar (editor)

At New York Fashion Week, bright orange lipstick literally popped off the runway. Paired with everything from minimalistic blacks to jolly floral prints, it made a statement that was fun, flirty and fresh, and it’s a trend you can easily wear this fall to be ahead of the fashion curve.

We saw this citrus trend at twelve different shows. While the tangerine shade does follow, spring’s hottest hue has the added plus of emphasizing your eye color and the highlights in your hair.

We asked Shiseido Makeup Artistic Director Dick Page, who created the brilliant orange lip for the Marc by Marc Jacobs and Isaac Mizrahi shows, how one unique shade can end up dominating the runways.

G-star in 3D

Sep. 16th 2010 by Mariana Davelaar (editor)

The runway show took place at the Pier 94 exhibition space, perched over the Hudson River on the western side of midtown Manhattan. A single-stretch catwalk provided plenty of opportunity for guests to study the collection pieces. A large, wooden Arc Pant sculptural backdrop and recurring motif in the catwalk center carpet reinforced the 3D underpinnings of the collection.

The front row included actress Liv Tyler and world chess number one Magnus Carlsen – both of whose images front G-Star’s upcoming Fall/Winter 2010 ad campaign. Curated by photographer Anton Corbijn, the campaign will be visible in print, outdoor and instore as of mid-September.

The Fashion line

Sep. 13th 2010 by Mariana Davelaar (editor)

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg didn’t take a private car or a cab to the official kick-off to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. “I just took the Fashion Line,” the mayor said. In honor of Fashion Week’s new digs at Lincoln Center, the city has officially renamed the 1-line subway the Fashion Line.

Though the politician is clearly a suit-and-tie kind of guy. Who was he wearing? Tie by Hermès, shirt by Paul Stuart, suit by Brooklyn tailor Martin Greenfield, and underwear by Bloomies. “But you could ask me any other day and get the same answer. I’m a fashion designer’s nightmare,” Bloomberg said.
