AMFI Fashion show

Jun. 24th 2010 by Fesjon Guest Editor

Guest Editor for a week: Ralph Lemarechal

In January the AMFI students (Amsterdam Fashion Institute) contacted me to shoot their show and I said yes. I love to report students because they have everything to prove, they still have a bit of freedom before the industry crushes them with their rules and expectations.

I requested to do only backstage shoots, I already do a lot of runway and I prefer to be backstage because you, see the models come ‘raw’ and slowly become the character they will be for a few seconds on the runway. Great ambiance, often frantic, and a great energy level.

Shoot: Denim serie by Ralph Lemarechal

Jun. 23rd 2010 by Fesjon Guest Editor

Guest Editor for a week: Ralph Lemarechal

Today Ashley Veraart from Fesjon.com was on the set to see me at work.

At 4:00 pm the team gathers in Ralph Lemarechal’s studio in Amsterdam. Today there will be a shoot from the denim series where Ralph is currently working on. For this series he photographs the models topless and wearing just a baggy jeans. Important for this series is that it is all about the model and her expression. The more skin, the stronger the face should be, according to Ralph. With this series Ralph tries to find the boundary between commercial and glamorous photography on the one hand, and more high fashion photography on the other hand.

Shoot: Eunbi Kim

Guest Editor for a week: Ralph Lemarechal

This project had an extremely short deadline, as often in the fashion world… Eunbi wanted to have pictures made of her latest collection, and was kind enough to choose me to make this happen.

The good news is that a lot of the pre-work had been done, a moodboard was ready, the overall style and tones of the make-up and pictures were agreed on… we were just missing a model.

There is an incredible number of models out there, but Eunbi designs require a certain type of girl – very high fashion. We received quite a large amount of suggestions from several model agencies but many were either to commercial, or just not giving us the ‘right vibe’. There is a clear split between models with a more ‘fashion’ or ‘commercial’ look. ( and of course the catwalk models that may not suit editorial and so on ….) . Some models can deliver on both fronts, but they are rare.

Tessa’s profile from Xistanz Model Management came and we knew she’d be right for the job.  With an excellent makeup artist on board, we were ready to shoot !!! Read More
