Designer, artist, photographer, costume designer, weight loss guru, bookshop owner, author and international man of mystery: Karl Lagerfeld is one of fashion’s favourite enigmas. No-one knows when exactly he was born, some say 1938, the local christening register and old school friends say 1933, Lagerfeld himself says neither, or whether his father was Russian, Swedish or German.
He’s famous for his outspoken opinions, having said that he has “no human feelings” and described himself as “a kind of fashion nymphomaniac who never gets an orgasm”, and – in the early Nineties – his controversial antics resulted in Anna Wintour walking out of his Fendi show because he had employed Italian porn star Moana Pozzi to model the collection.
