Rebecca heeft zich voor haar afstudeercollectie voor FIA laten inspireren door iets waar iedereen zich schuldig aan maakt maar waar bijna niemand de officiële wetenschappelijke term voor kent;  het beoordelen van iemand op zijn uiterlijk ofwel fysionomie.

Physiognomy is the art or science by which the characteristics of the mind are discovered in the general configuration of the body. This configuration of form and structure creates frictions between the garment and the personality wearing it.

Elongated center, synched in waist; the abdominal form -  ‘the smallness of your waist is an indication that the nourishing part of your body is weak. To restrain the abdominal form: keep your eyes open and mouth shut, eat little, sleep little, and take your food in a concentrated form, and engage in an occupation demanding thought and great activity’.*

Ideas are developed through the use of materials and silhouette; the printed fabrics and shape created from folds, and layers of built up fabric on areas around the body. This implementation of research explores ideas of judging physical form to recreate ideas of the persona, giving the option to cultivate and improve ones body and mind or to restrain it.

De bijna sculpturale ontwerpen uit de collectie Morphogenesis van Pauline van Dongen zijn onstaan uit een fascinatie voor de relatie tussen vorm en restvorm. Pauline legt uit:

I am fascinated by the interaction between people and their surroundings; body versus space; the order and arrangement of things around me.
My work focuses on the surface, with fabric as a starting point.

In my attempt to distort the relationship between the body and the space around it, I have changed their outlines, like the artist Antony Gormley. By making a mould of a body he creates a negative hollow shape.
This made me wonder: Is the body the content and the clothes the container, or is it the other way round?
My work explores the void between the body and the garment. Different materials like synthetic crin and buntal emphasize this space. Alienating shapes or capsules floating around the body are turned into clothes, like organic sculptures. Metal knitwear and the contrast between dark shades and bright tops create a sharp, minimalistic feel.
In collaboration with Freedom Of Creation I developed an innovative shoe, which is printed three-dimensional.

All this feeds my belief in complexity, problem solving, desires and in my own mood swings.
Tactility, texture and no-frills modernity are the essence of my work.

De ietwat lugubere inspiratiebron van Nick leidt tot prachtige prints en een bijzonder vormenspel. Over hoe zijn fascinatie voor de donkere kant van het leven hem inspireerde tot deze collectie vertelt hij het volgende:

I was intrigued by dark and sinister ways of self-harming as a form of communication, and this fascination triggered a starting point in me.
By glorifying this topic, contemporary cruel reality has been transformed into a surreal sad parade.
Searching for existence, slicing into skin, our veins are represented and translated onto textiles printed with a psychedelic wood grain texture.

The collection resulted in garments with strong architectural lines with a complex character.
Volumes are created hanging down from the shoulder, reaching no further than the hip.
Key items are skin-tight trousers bound around the legs with corresponding tops wrapped round the body.

The materials presented are raw, matt and dusty in contrast with smooth and shiny metallic surfaces.
They are offered in a palette of blacks and greys to reinforce a dark and heavy aspect.
Nudes represent reality and purity, blue and grey metallic surfaces reveal a sad, yet glorifying coldness, and a surprising bright violet creates tension and holds the attention.

De collectie van Josine bestaat uit luxueus ogende materialen en organische vormen. Haar inspiratiebron is erg origineel; een ziekte veroorzaakt door een overkill aan mooie beelden…

The Stendhal Syndrome is a psychosomatic illness induced by viewing an overload of art, predominantly paintings from the Renaissance period.
Every year a small number of tourists are knocked out in Florence, overwhelmed by the huge amount of art the city has to offer. The heavy symbolism found in Renaissance art confuses the viewer and is translated in the brain into emotions which can lead to serious symptoms such as aphasia.

Fascinated by this syndrome, in which beautiful aesthetic images produce an extreme and opposite experience, I play with strong contrasts, creating a new world in the in between no man’s land, which was the starting point of my collection.
Elements and decorations from the Renaissance period are incorporated into this collection, brought to life into two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes by fabrics and constructions, using intense colors like cobalt blue, saturated moss green, faded purple and bruised orange; creating a similar confusing and dazzling atmosphere.

De collectie van Janneke Verhoeven is erg grafisch en draait om vorm. Veel a-symmetrie en vernieuwende vormen. Om tot deze ontwerpen te komen, mouleert ze materialen op de paspop om met zo min mogelijk aanpassingen draagbare kledingstukken te vormen.

Janneke zelf zegt het volgende over haar afstudeercollectie voor het Fashion Institute Arnhem:

For my last collection; ‘In a collusion of angles’, two opposites are collaborating in a new found structure.
I was searching for a way to integrate structures in my work, I used the geometric forms of the tangram puzzle. In either fluent or stiff form, shapes are created around the body. Fluent lines are interrupted or disturbed by angles. They make parts of the garments protrude from the body, creating unexpected shapes for a renewed elegance. The body is loosely wrapped in large geometric forms.
The materials became a collision of fabrics created by nature, for example; felt wool, silks, leathers, and the artificial structured materials; such as transparent polyester and polished surfaces.

For my work I’m mostly inspired by structures and architecture but also by the movement of the body itself. The way we use our body and way of dressing to communicate. I try to break down existing aesthetics of femininity.’

Franciscus van der Meer gebruikt zijn kleding als communicatiemiddel. Het verhaal dat hij met deze collectie wil vertellen is nogal zwaar, maar wel één dat nooit vergeten mag worden…

it’s not to provoke, but to evoke: emotion, remembrance and consciousness.
it’s because as time passes, the shock seems to subside.
it’s because of the current right wing political activity in western europe.
it’s because a group’s actions should never be mistaken for an individual’s actions.
it’s because this is the darkest chapter of human history and it defies my understanding.
it’s because when I walk through old cities i see the scars embedded in the architecture, i see historic buildings where curtains were shut or secret doors opened.
it’s because I felt the need to say something, to try to comprehend, to remind this generation of its past.
it’s to create certain awareness of what our generation does with this heritage, it’s because i wanted to create a monument; one you can wear, to remind yourself and those around you.

Met slechts 2 kleuren weet Oda toch een spannende collectie neer te zetten vol verrassende silhouetten met als titel:

‘Hobohème Hemel’

Tallozen verdwenen in de mist der tijden,
Anderen werden vereeuwigd aan de gevel.

‘Hobohème Hemel’  is geïnspireerd op ‘The Chelsea Hotel’ te New York.

Daar waar de rebel ineen duikt door een geconstrueerde schouderplooi, wordt het karakter van de poëet verstoord door een rebels naar voren gestuwde heup.

Van de roedde gerukte gordijnen, veelal uitgevoerd in zijde,
geven de collectie een poëtisch karakter.
De specifieke gordijnplooi word gedragen door de sieraden van de collectie, een gordijnhaak verzonken in goud.

Adorned in elegance

“Watching your nude figure my eyes give heed into your refined elegance”

Wanneer de man het object van mijn blik wordt krijgen sensualiteit en verleiding een andere lading. De conventionele machtsverhouding tussen mannen en vrouwen wordt verstoord en een andere man ontstaat, eentje die verleidt door zijn kwetsbaarheid te tooien. Een volledig geklede man in een overhemd pak, maar tijdens het lopen worden de snedes in het pak zichtbaar en vang je een glimp op van zijn naakte lichaam. Dit is het spel wat mij inspireert: het bedekken en ontbloten van het lichaam, met doorkijkjes en gleuven in klassieke kledingstukken.
